Brew Kettle

A copper Brew Kettle on its iron tray over a campfire

The Brew Kettle is where every drink starts. Put it on a heat source, add the ingredients, and a few seconds later it holds a batch of juice, must or wort, ready to bottle. If you’ve ever cooked in Farmer’s Delight’s cooking pot, you already know how it works.

The kettle only brews while the block right below it is hot:

  • Campfire, Fire, Lava, Soul Campfire and Soul Fire: the kettle stands on an iron tray above them.
  • Lava Cauldron and Magma Block: it sits right on top.
  • Through a Hopper: heat passes up through it, so a hopper can sit between the kettle and the heat source and still feed it.
  • With Farmer’s Delight, its stove heats the kettle too.

A campfire has to be lit. The little flame in the kettle’s screen lights up when it’s heated.

Hang it up: sneak and right-click the kettle with an empty hand to swap the tray for an iron handle, or place it against the underside of a block. A hanging kettle still brews over a fire right below it, and looks great under a chain.

Open the kettle with a right-click and put the ingredients in. The gauge on the right shows the brew in its colour and how full the kettle is; hover it for the servings.

A
6 ingredient slots
B
The brew in the kettle, up to 64 servings

Each recipe makes 4 servings and takes 10 s. A heated kettle steams and bubbles even when it’s empty; while a batch brews, the lid rattles too, and when it’s done it lets out a puff of steam. The kettle keeps brewing more batches as long as there are ingredients, up to 64 servings in total.

Once a brew is done, the lid stays up and you can see it inside, sinking as you take servings out. While a batch brews, the lid is down; when the last serving is gone, it closes.

Like a cauldron: right-click the kettle with an empty container.

  • a Glass Bottle takes 1 serving,
  • an empty Bucket takes 4 servings, so the kettle needs at least that many.

Buckets of juice and wort can’t be poured out into the world, like milk.

Grape Juice and Sweet Berry Juice are drinks on their own: they take 2 s to drink, you can always drink them, and they fill a little hunger.

1.2 saturation

Grape juice also lowers Tipsy by one level. Wort has to ferment first; you can’t drink it.

Hoppers can run the kettle on their own:

  • From above, a hopper feeds ingredients in, and empty bottles or buckets.
  • From the sides, it feeds empty bottles or buckets.
  • The kettle fills them from the brew, and a hopper below pulls out the filled ones.

Nothing pulls the ingredients or the brew itself out.

A comparator next to the kettle gives a signal as soon as anything is inside, ingredients, brew or containers, and a stronger one the fuller all of it gets. A brew on its own only gives a weak signal, so use it to tell “something in there” from “empty” rather than to count servings.

The kettle is copper, and it ages like copper.

Weathering
  1. CopperCopper
  2. ExposedExposed
  3. WeatheredWeathered
  4. OxidizedOxidized
  • Over time it turns exposed, weathered and finally oxidized. It brews the same at every stage.
  • Honeycomb waxes it and stops the weathering. An axe scrapes off wax or one stage of weathering, and lightning cleans it.
  • Break it full and it keeps its brew: the item’s tooltip and fill bar show it, and you can place it somewhere else and carry on. Ingredients and waiting bottles or buckets drop on the ground.
  • It doesn’t weather while someone has its screen open.
  • Lost the fire? Taking the heat away doesn’t reset a batch, but the arrow slips back twice as fast as it filled. Ingredients are only used up when a batch finishes, so nothing is wasted.
  • One brew at a time. The kettle won’t brew a different drink on top of a brew that’s still inside: it waits, with the ingredients untouched, until you’ve bottled the old one out. At 64 servings it waits too.
  • Keep the grid clean. Any item the recipe doesn’t use stops the kettle, leftovers from another recipe included. A hopper on top pushes in whatever it holds, so feed it only ingredients.
  • Where’s my XP? Each batch earns a little experience. The kettle saves it up and gives it to the next player who fills a bottle or bucket by hand, or drops it when it’s broken.
  • Not enough for a bucket? A click with a bucket just opens the screen. Sneaking with a bottle or bucket does nothing.
  • One hopper, two jobs: a hopper under the kettle passes the campfire’s heat up and collects the filled containers.
  • Sneak and right-click with an empty hand to hang the kettle from its handle, and again to stand it back up.
  • The kettle can stand in water, it breaks quickly with any tool (a pickaxe is fastest), keeps its anvil name, and doesn’t stack. An explosion can destroy it, brew and all.
  • Recipe book: brews unlock when you pick up their main crop, sorted into Juices, Worts and Misc.
