Farming guide

Farmer’s Delight farming grows in stages. You start with a handful of wild plants, turn them into fields, and end with soil that feeds your crops by itself. This guide walks the path in order; each step links to the page with all the details.

Look for leafy tufts with small flowers:

They are rare: a wild onion patch spawns in about 1 in 120 chunks, a beach cabbage patch in 1 in 30. When you find one, there are usually more nearby. Break them by hand for seeds, or with shears to take the plant itself.

The Wild crops page has a biome picker and every patch’s details.

Till dirt near water and plant:

  • Cabbage Seeds and Onions grow like wheat.
  • Tomato Seeds grow into a bush, then a vine you can pick again and again. Hang Rope above it and it climbs.
  • Rice goes into shallow water, one block deep.

Growing times, harvesting and drops: Crops.

A Flint Knife is cheap and opens up a lot: Straw from grass and wheat, extra leather and ham from animals, and the Cutting Board. Straw becomes rope, canvas and bales (Straw, rope & nets).

Compost and Rich Soil
Compost and Rich Soil

Organic Compost is crafted from dirt, straw, rotten flesh or tree bark and bone meal. Place it and leave it: it slowly rots into Rich Soil on its own.

Sunlight, water and other compost blocks next to it speed it up. One block alone under open sky takes about 76 min. A pile with water beside it goes much faster: about 24 min for the middle of a 3×3 layer next to water. Torches don’t help; only sunlight counts.

The Organic Compost page has a calculator for your setup.

Rich Soil gives the plant on it a free bone meal now and then (20% of the time it gets a turn). Till it into Rich Soil Farmland for crops; it cannot be trampled. Saplings, berry bushes and rice planted on it get the boost too. See Rich Soil.

Mushroom colonies on Rich Soil
Mushroom colonies on Rich Soil

Put a brown or red mushroom on Rich Soil and it soon turns into a Brown Mushroom Colony. Colonies grow only on Rich Soil, from smallest to full size in about 14 min. Harvest a full colony with a knife for 3 mushrooms at once, and it grows back. See Mushroom colonies.
