Crops

Farmer’s Delight adds four crops.
Cabbage and
Onion grow just like wheat.
Tomatoes start as a bush, turn into a vine you can pick again and again, and climb rope.
Rice grows in shallow water and pushes up panicles on top.
You can’t buy these crops from farmers, so your first seeds come from wild crops, village farms, chests or the wandering trader (see getting seeds).
Planting and growing
Section titled “Planting and growing”Each crop gets a chance to grow one stage every so often: on average every 68.3 seconds. In a normal field on moist farmland that chance is 1 in 3. Crops need light to grow, and the times below are averages without bone meal or Rich Soil.
| Crop | Plant it on | Light | Ready in about |
|---|---|---|---|
| farmland | 9+ | 24 min | |
| farmland | 9+ | 24 min | |
| farmland | 9+ | 34 min to the first tomatoes | |
| water, one block deep | 6+ above the water | 14 min to the first panicles | |
| grow on top of rice | 9+ | 89 min more |
Plant in rows, not solid blocks. Like wheat, a crop grows half as fast (1 in 6) when the same crop sits next to it on two sides at a right angle, or on a diagonal. Single rows with a different crop or a water channel in between stay at full speed.
Cabbages and onions
Section titled “Cabbages and onions”Plant
Cabbage Seeds or an
Onion on farmland and wait. Both have 8 stages. A ripe cabbage gives a head and seeds, often several seeds. An onion is its own seed, and even an unripe onion gives the onion back, so breaking one early costs you nothing.
Tomatoes
Section titled “Tomatoes”
Tomato Seeds grow into a small bush first. After 4 stages the bush turns into a tomato vine, which needs 3 more stages to fruit.
Pick ripe tomatoes with an empty hand. Right-click a ripe vine to get 1 or 2 tomatoes, with a 5% chance of an extra
Rotten Tomato. The vine drops back to its first vine stage and grows new fruit, so you never replant. Breaking a ripe vine gives the tomatoes and a seed back, and the vine is gone.

Climbing rope
Section titled “Climbing rope”Hang
Rope above a vine and it climbs. Every so often the top of the vine grows onto the rope above, ripe or not, until it covers 3 rope blocks. Each rope block becomes its own vine that ripens and gets picked on its own, so one seed can give you 4 vines’ worth of tomatoes.
Vines on rope need light 8+ or a view of the sky to stay alive. Breaking one leaves the rope in place, ready for the vine below to climb again.

Plant
Rice in a full water source block, one block deep, standing on
Rich SoilCoarse Dirt
DirtGrass BlockMoss Block
MudMuddy Mangrove RootsMyceliumPale Moss BlockPodzolRooted Dirt. It won’t go into flowing water, and clicking dry dirt or farmland with rice shows a hint instead. Rice checks the light just above the water (6+), not at the plant.
After 4 stages, mature rice grows
Rice Panicles on top if the space above is free. The panicles have 4 stages of their own and need light 8+ or open sky.
Harvest the panicles, not the rice. Ripe panicles drop a
Rice Panicle, or rice grain plus
Straw if you break them with a knife. Unripe panicles drop nothing. Breaking the plant in the water gives back one grain and takes the panicles with it.
Speed up the panicles. They grow slowly on their own (1 in 26 each time, about 89 min from first to ripe). Put Rich Soil under the rice: its free bone meal goes to the rice, and mature rice passes it on to the panicles.
Bone meal
Section titled “Bone meal”| Plant | One bone meal does |
|---|---|
| Cabbage, onion | +2 to 5 stages, like wheat |
| Tomato bush | Always works: +1 to 4 stages; growth past the bush carries over into the vine |
| Tomato vine | +1 or 2 stages, with a 30% chance to also climb the rope above. On a ripe vine it climbs, or feeds the vine above |
| Rice | Always works: +1 to 4 stages; extra growth goes into the panicles. Not once the panicles are ripe |
| Rice panicles | +1 stage, but 25% of the time nothing happens |
Bone meal works the same by hand, from a dispenser or from Rich Soil. One exception: right-clicking a ripe tomato vine with bone meal picks the tomatoes, as with an empty hand, and keeps your bone meal. To push a ripe vine up its rope, use a dispenser.
Getting seeds
Section titled “Getting seeds”- Wild crops. Break
Wild Cabbage,
Tomato Shrub,
Wild Onion or
Wild Rice for seeds, or cut them on a Cutting Board. Wild crops shows where they grow. - Village farms. Every kind of village grows some Farmer’s Delight crops on its farms (Villagers). Break a few and you have seeds.
- Chests. Shipwrecks, mineshafts, dungeons and village houses carry seeds and crops (Loot).
- Wandering trader. Sells Cabbage Seeds, Onion, Rice, Tomato Seeds for 1 emerald each (Villagers).
- Your own crops. Tomatoes and rotten tomatoes craft into seeds, and rice panicles give rice grain.
Good to know
Section titled “Good to know”- A tomato vine keeps trying to climb after it ripens, so you can add rope at any time.
- Rich Soil Farmland can’t be trampled and accepts every crop that grows on farmland, other mods’ crops included.
- Rotten tomatoes only come from ripe vines, whether you pick or break them.
- Throw rotten tomatoes. Right-click to throw one, or load them into a dispenser. It does no damage, but it splats on whatever it hits with a juicy squelch: perfect for pranks.
- Farmer villagers plant Cabbage Seeds, Onion, Tomato Seeds, but not rice (Villagers).
