Straw, rope & nets

Straw is the fibre of Farmer’s Delight. You get it by cutting grass and crops with a knife, and it becomes rope, canvas, bales and mats.
Getting straw
Section titled “Getting straw”Hold any knife and break grass, fully grown wheat, ripe rice panicles or sandy shrubs:
| Drop | From | Needs | Chance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short GrassTall Grass | broken with a knife | 20% | |
| broken with a knife | 30% | ||
| broken with a knife | always | ||
| Rice Panicles fully grown | broken with a knife | always |
Unripe wheat and rice give no straw. The Cutting Board turns rice panicles, wild rice and bamboo blocks into straw too, and it all goes into rope, canvas and the rest:
Rope is a thin column you can climb like a ladder, with nothing to bump into. It doesn’t need support, so you can hang it from a ceiling or stretch it through mid-air.
- Placing. Put against the side of a block, rope ties onto it; it also links up with walls, iron bars and other rope next to it.
- Hanging it down. Right-click any rope in a column with more rope in your hand and the new piece goes on at the bottom, so you can lower a long rope from the top without climbing down. It extends through water, but not through lava.
- Pulling it up. Sneak and right-click a rope with an empty hand to reel in the bottom piece; it goes straight into your inventory. Server owners can turn this off in the config.
- Bells. Rope right under a bell gets tied to it. Right-click the column with an empty hand (without sneaking) to ring the bell at the top, up to 24 ropes above you. A bell pull for your village or base.
- Tomatoes. Tomato vines climb rope and give you a tall tomato wall.
Rope fence and gate
Section titled “Rope fence and gate”
Rope Fence joins other rope fences, rope fence gates and solid blocks, but not wooden fences. Leads tie to it like to any fence. The
Rope Fence Gate blocks the way when closed and lets everything through when open.
Safety nets and bales
Section titled “Safety nets and bales”
Safety Net is a thin net (2 pixels) halfway up its block. Land on it and you take no fall damage, and it bounces you back up, keeping 60% of your falling speed. Sneak as you land to stop the bounce, but then you take normal fall damage. Nets can sit in water.
Bales soften falls too. A
Straw Bale works like a hay bale and a
Rice Bale does the same: falling on either does only 20% of the damage. A campfire on top of either one sends up tall signal smoke, like on hay.
Tatami and canvas
Section titled “Tatami and canvas”
Tatami Block is a woven block that pairs up. Place a tatami against an unpaired one and the two join into one long mat; sneak to place it on its own. Breaking one half unpairs the other.
Full Tatami Mat is a two-block floor mat you place like a bed, and
Half Tatami Mat covers one block. Both need a block under them.
Canvas goes into canvas signs, paintings, scaffolding and books. A
Canvas Rug is a paper-thin floor covering that lets sunlight through, handy on top of an Organic Compost heap.
