Knives

Knives are the kitchen tool of Farmer’s Delight and a quick, light weapon. You need one for most Cutting Board recipes, and with a knife in hand many kills and harvests give extra drops: ham from pigs, leather from cows, straw from grass, slices from cakes and pies.

Knives hit fast but softly. Each hit or broken block costs 1 durability. Repair a knife in an anvil with the same material as the matching tools; the flint knife, the cheap starter, is repaired like stone tools. Netherite Knife doesn't burn in lava or fire.

Knives also give straw from grass and crops. Break a placed cake or pie with a knife and you get the slices that were left (a cake has 7, a Farmer’s Delight pie 4). Without a knife, a pie drops nothing (Pies & cakes).

Right-click uses

Pumpkin	Carves it like shears and drops 4 Pumpkin Seeds
Mushroom colony	Harvests every mushroom at once
Placed pie	Gives you one slice instead of eating it

Backstabbing

Backstabbing is a knife enchantment: hit a mob from behind and you deal more damage. It counts when you stand within about 60° of straight behind it.

Seen from above: the 120° zone behind the target, both at the same height and the target looking straight ahead. A height difference or the target looking up or down shrinks the zone.

At level I it multiplies your damage by ×1.4, at II by ×1.6, at III by ×1.8. A backstab plays the critical-hit sound. It works for mobs holding an enchanted knife too, so watch your back. You can get it from the enchanting table, librarian trades or randomly enchanted loot.

On top of Backstabbing, knives take the enchantments of these groups: durability, fire aspect, melee weapon, mining, mining loot, sharp weapon, vanishing, weapon. Sweeping Edge doesn’t go on a knife.

• Knives knock mobs back a little less than a bare hand.
• Knives break decorated pots, and piglins love the Golden Knife like gold.
